It's Better to Give ...

Today I share a message on "the simple and practical way to find peace" from the book The Golden Present: Daily Inspirational Readings by Sri Swami Satchidananda.

Sri Swami Satchidananda was a religious teacher, spiritual leader and yoga master, who dedicated his life to promoting peace.

After years of religious study in India, he moved to the United States in the 1960s. He came to public attention by giving the opening convocation at Woodstock where he called music "the celestial sound ... that controls the whole universe."

500,000 people at Woodstock in 1969

Sri Swami Satchidananda founded Integral Yoga and Yogaville, a community in Virginia where he lived. He received dozens of honors for his public service including the Albert Schweitzer Prize for Humanitarianism (also received by Desmond Tutu and President Jimmy Carter), and the U Thant Peace Award (also given to Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela and His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama).

Here's what he wrote on finding peace:

"Any time you complain of worry, anxiety, depression, fear, hatred, jealousy - whatever it is - sit back and analyze the cause.

"If you're really sincere, you'll find out that you wanted something for yourself.  Selfish desire causes all the problems.

"Do things for the sake of others, not for yourself. That is the simple and practical way to find peace."
